Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj (DPS Vasant Kunj or DPS VK) is a co-educational private school located in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, India. DPS Vasant Kunj has a combined strength of 205 teachers at the senior and junior level, and an enrollment of four thousand students.

History

Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj, was established in 1991 by the Delhi Public School Society, running its afternoon shift in DPS Vasant Vihar. The school moved to its present campus in Vasant Kunj in 1994.

Academics

The school is considered among the top schools in India, always ranked within the top 50 by several publications. [1] The school is affiliated with the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE). The school offers a common curriculum up to Grade 10, along with the option of foreign language. In Grade 11 and Grade 12, the school offers three 5-subject streams: Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Economics/Computer Science and English), Commerce (Mathematics, Economics, Accounts, Business Studies and English) and Humanities (Mathematics/Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science and English)

Student Council

The Student Council is a body of student representatives, headed by the Head Girl and the Head Boy.[2]

Consumer Care Council

Founded in July 2004, the Consumer Care Council (3Cs)[3] spreads information on consumer awareness rights, duties, responsibilities and acts against malpractices like false claims, adultery, high prices, poor service and deceptive packing. The DPS Society has pioneered in this respect by the commencement of 3Cs and hopes to make its students responsible citizens. On 27th 0ctober 2011, 3Cs organised a Consumer fest called CONFEST 2010, in which over 20 top schools from Delhi-NCR participated.

Environment Council

Under the aegis of the DPS Society, the Council for Environmental Education for Children (colloquially CEEC or Environment Council) was formed at the school in 1994. Today, the CEEC has more than 100 members. These students have participated in activities inside and outside school with organizations such as The Energy and Resources Institute, World Wildlife Fund, Development Alternatives and Kids for Tigers. The council conducts air-monitoring and water-monitoring workshops annually, and has banned the use of plastic bags in school.

Code Warriors

The computer club, the Code Warriors, began in 1997. Arun Darlie Koshy was the founder president. In 1999 the club won the Exun trophy. The next year it won the Exun 2000 trophy again. In 2001, eight Code Warriors cleared the National Informatics Olympiad in the Delhi State, with one going on to represent India in the International Informatics Olympiad, held in Korea.

The Code Warriors have a presence in the IITs, as well as in foreign universities like Stanford University, Berkeley University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Drexel University and Texas A&M.

The Code Warriors share and develop technology. Some of the prize-winning software developed by the Code Warriors are N-crypt It, Map Builder, Canon, Graphics, and Digital Messenger, among others. Code Warriors have also gone on to innovate in tech fields, notably, forming the core team behind MapMyIndia.com, a popular site which now powers services like Yahoo! Maps India.

The Code Warriors have won more than 950 individual awards, and more than 30 trophies. They were the overall winners at WarP 2007 held at DPS Mathura Road; overall winners at Matrix-Ecomm 2007 held at Mount St. Mary’s School; overall winners Exun 2006 held at DPS RK Puram; overall winners at DynamiX 2006 held at Ramjas School, RK Puram; overall runners up at FORCE Fest 2006 held at Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai; overall winners at St Mary’s School Fest 2006; apart from other outstanding achievements in WarP 2006 held at DPS Mathura Road; and MINET 2007 & MINET 2006 held at Mother’s International School. Model UN

The school sent its first Model UN delegation to the British School Model UN in 2004. Since then, the school has sent a delegation each year to the Global Classrooms: Delhi Public School MUN, which was hosted by Delhi Public School, RK Puram in New Delhi each year, up to 2008.

Apart from the official delegation sent by the school to various conferences, the school has been represented through independent delegations at other notable Model UN conferences, such as the Amicus Model UN Conference in 2009, DAVMUN in 2009 and 2010, WordzMUN in 2008 and 2009, alongwith MUNQSMUN in 2010 and 2011.

The school won the coveted Secretary General's Award for the Best Overall Delegation at the Global Classrooms: Delhi Public School MUN in 2006[5], 2007 and for a third consecutive time in 2008. The school has always won amongst the highest individual honours at the conference - 12 awards in 2006, 10 awards in 2007, and a record 14 awards in 2008. The school's delegations have also won individual awards at all other conferences they have participated in.

The DPS Vasant Kunj Model UN team has been represented on the Executive Board at the Global Classrooms: Delhi Public School MUN every year since 2005. DPS Vasant Kunj is the only external school to ever have two Chairpersons on the conference Executive Board - a feat achieved twice, in 2007 and yet again in 2008.[6] Students from the school have also been appointed to the Executive Boards of WordzMUN 2008, Indian Model UN 2008, WordzMUN 2009, Amicus Model UN Conference 2009, DAVMUN 2009, ITMGMUN 2010, and WordzMUN 2010.

On the basis of their performance at the Global Classrooms: Delhi Public School MUN in different years, students from the school have been selected on scholarships for six-member and ten-member delegations representing the country at international conferences. Students of the school were selected for the UNA-USA Model UN Conference, held at the UN Headquarters in New York City, and also selected for the UNA-USA Pacific Rim International MUN, hosted by University of Southern California in Los Angeles

Quiz Club

The Quiz Club participates in inter-school and inter-zonal tournaments across the country. The club also participates in the annual Japan Quiz, and won an all-expenses paid trip to a quizzing tournament in Japan in 2008 by winning the Japan Quiz.

Sports

The school sends teams for basketball, football (soccer), tennis and cricket tournaments, conducting training after school hours. The football team has won, and finished as first runners-up in several national, zonal and inter-school tournaments, including the ONGC Cup, the Inter-DPS tournament and the ESPN-Star Sports Junior Premier League. Kishleyt has represented Delhi State and India under 13 and under 14, and has been selected for the India under 16 football team.

Varuni Beotra,Swarnakshi Kapil,Arundhati and Nishita Sabharwal has reprsented Delhi State Basketball team for National tournaments. School girls under 14 won National Final Inter DPS Basketball Tournament played at DPS Vasant Kunj in 2011 School’s Under 14 girls category Basketball team were the winner and Boys Under 14 category were runners-up in 3rd AFBBS Basketball Tournament. School's girls Basketball team were winner in 8th open BBPS Pitampura invitational basketball.

The school has training facilities for volleyball and karate.

The school does not have any facilities for swimming or golf, and does not send teams for these events.

Exchange Programs

The school hosts academic and cultural exchange programs with Bukit Panjang Government High School (Singapore), Mauritius College (Mauritius) and Moerike Gymnasium Esslingen (Germany).

The school is a part of the German Youth Camp Programme organised by Goethe Institut, New Delhi. A Youth Camp was held at Bielefeld, Germany, in which a student from Class XI represented DPS Vasant Kunj and India.
